 8 Measure the after length and select a tailpiece:
The short section of the violin string behind the bridge is known as the "after length". This section of the string actively vibrates when the sting is bowed. This vibration can be tuned by changing the length of tailpiece used - thereby changing the amount of free string. Tuning the after length to a sympathetic frequency can have a beneficial effect on the tone of the violin. Tuning the G-string after length to a high D is usually a good starting place.
